OCTOPUS HEAT EXCHANGER
Puts the SQUEEZE on Curing Costs |
|

Lamar Jenkins
Live Oak, Florida |
|
Knowing how to place an accurate value on things is a
career for Lamar Jenkins of Live Oak,
Florida. He is an elected official in Suwannee County,
where he serves as property appraiser.
|
|
But
that is just his day job. Jenkins is also a successful
tobacco farmer. In 2001, he produced 66 acres of flue-cured
leaf.
When he
faced the task of converting his barns to indirect heat, he
had some serious choices to make. He wanted top value with
his purchase of a heat exchanger, including fuel savings,
dependability, and good cures.
|
 |
|
It looked like
a tall order. But in his own words, here's how Lamar came out:
'The Octopus
gave us quality cures and excellent fuel economy." "Ray Shealey
of BFD Tobacco Equipment recommended the Octopus Heat Exchanger to
me. Some of my friends had used other types and were dissatisfied. I
decided to try the Octopus in two ten-box Long barns, although I
doubted I could get enough heat through all that tobacco. But I got
quick, efficient drying just like we were used to with direct heat.
The Octopus gave us quality cures and excellent fuel economy. It was
impressive. I'm convinced this is the best curing technology
available."

"The Octopus
ran at least thirty per cent cheaper."
"We had an Octopus Heat Exchanger put in a Roanoke barn in 2001. We
ran six cures through it, and the Octopus was at least thirty per
cent cheaper to operate than another make we were using. With the
Octopus, we got great results without any changes in how we are used
to curing. We were well pleased."

"For fuel
savings, the Octopus beats anything else out there."
"With things like they are now, we need to keep our costs down as
much as we can. For fuel savings, the Octopus beats anything else
out there. We have proved that for ourselves. We have to convert
another barn for the 2002 crop, and that will be an Octopus too. It
is very dependable and trouble-free."

"I hope the Octopus
doesn't put us out of the gas business."
"When we installed the Octopus Heat Exchanger for Kenny and Ricky Apple,
I told them it would save them money on gas. The actual results were
almost unbelievable. It used at least fifty gallons less per cure than
another brand of heat exchanger right beside it. I joked with them I
hope the Octopus doesn't put us out of the gas business."

'We got great fuel savings without changing the way
we cure."
"We had
the Octopus Heat Exchanger installed in three Bulktobac
barns in 2001. I'm very satisfied. We got great fuel savings
without changing the way we cure. At first, I wasn't sure if
I could dry the leaf in time to set the color, but I didn't
have to worry. The cures came out just great. The tobacco
quality itself speaks for that. I'd recommend the Octopus
Heat Exchanger to anybody."

"The Octopus
gives us good cures, and is cheaper to operate."
"We have
three Bulktobac barns that we have used since 1980, and we
needed to convert them in 2001. I consulted with Jay Womble
at Patetown-Dixie Gas, and he said the Octopus is the best
heat exchanger out there. After one season, I have to agree.
The Octopus gives us good cures, and is cheaper to operate
than a different brand of heat exchanger we put in some
other barns. To yellow my tobacco in those other barns, I
had to run them wide open, and they burn gas like you've
never seen. So I'm satisfied we made the right choice with
the Octopus."
